You can cancel the Samsung art store

Art Mode is the reason you bought a Frame: the TV goes quiet and a picture hangs there instead. That part is built in and free. The monthly fee is for Samsung's catalogue, and it is worth knowing you can keep the wall and let the catalogue go.

What the subscription actually covers

Art Mode itself, the matte, the motion sensor, the brightness that follows the room: all of it ships with the TV and none of it is subscription-only. The subscription unlocks Samsung's art store, a catalogue you browse from the remote. Stop paying and Art Mode still works. You just need pictures of your own to put in it.

There are three good sources, and you can mix them.

1. Your own photographs

The best art on most walls is a photograph the household took. Samsung supports this two ways: over USB, with a stick plugged into the One Connect box, or through the SmartThings app on your phone. Both work; both involve some file juggling. The Frame wants a picture at its own resolution, 3840 by 2160, and a portrait photo will not know where to put itself.

Wall Muse takes the juggling away. Pick a photo, draw the frame around the part you want, and it goes straight from the phone to the Frame over your home Wi-Fi, already at the right size. No SmartThings, no USB, nothing uploaded anywhere. Hanging photographs is free in the app and always will be.

2. The masters

The great collections have been quietly releasing their holdings into the public domain for a decade: paintings, prints and photographs with the rights waived, scanned at a resolution that looks astonishing at four thousand pixels. A harbour by Turner or a woodblock by Hiroshige costs nothing to hang and never has.

The catch is finding them and getting them onto the TV. Wall Muse does both. The masters is a curated wing of that public-domain art, hand-picked for the Frame in walls you can browse on the phone or here on the site, and a tap hangs any piece at full resolution. A few of the walls: Water, still, Japanese woodblocks, Night pieces.

3. A sentence

Sometimes the picture you want does not exist yet. Describe it and Wall Muse paints it, in any of twelve styles, and hangs it. There is a free allowance every month for this, and a Pro tier for people whose walls change often.

Cancelling

The subscription is managed wherever you started it: on the TV under the art store's membership settings, or through your Samsung account on the web. Anything you hung yourself stays on the Frame; pieces that came from the catalogue may leave with it, so hang something of your own first and the wall never goes blank in between.

Then fill the Frame from the phone. One evening with a photo library and a wall from the vaults and you will not miss the catalogue.
